Recently renovated by designers Loukas Angelou and Vasso Asfi, this exceptional Manhattan loft reflects the owners’ diverse backgrounds, outgoing natures and vibrant personalities. Inspiration came right after encountering the loft’s new cosmopolitan occupants, the two designers note, and evolved into an elegantly choreographed interior underpinned by an eclectic aesthetic that reflects the building’s industrial heritage. The understated elegance of contemporary Memphis Group boldly combines minimalism and the zany playfulness reminiscent of the 1980s.
The loft features a large open space which the designers have taken full advantage of to create a spacious living and dining area where the owners can entertain 10 to 15 guests for dinner or cocktails if desired. The layout is centered around a central seating area and features multiple satellite breakout areas on the periphery, including a small workstation and study nook. It invites guests to meet in intimate clusters and chat with ease. Decorated in white tones, the open-plan kitchen offers ample storage and seating without distracting from the main social hub, while the adjoining dining area discreetly emphasizes its presence.
Anchored in a mischievous collection of contemporary art that reflects the eclectic tastes of the owners, the interior design of the living and dining areas is based on a whimsical interplay of colours, textures and shapes. Exposed brickwork, unpainted wooden beams, and hardwood floors give the space an urban grittiness that’s whimsically contrasted by an eclectically curated collection of minimalist furniture of stylized elegance and curvaceous geometry. Complemented by a range of unique rugs and lighting that blur the lines between artwork and furniture, and complemented by a subtle color palette of soft pastels peppered with vibrant blues and reds, the various decorative elements the designers cleverly brought together in harmony merge into a sophisticated ensemble.
