Contemporary house in shades of gray

Architects Mona Singal and Rafael Zalc designed the RJ Apartment in São Paulo, Brazil, which embodies the national design aesthetic. This 70 square meter property, the second home of a family from Israel, overlooks the monument of Latin America.

The color palette plays off darker steel grays with lighter wood paneling and a cement floor to give the space a sense of gravity and dramatic contrast. In the dining room, the Equilibrio dining table was specially crafted by the architects for this project using goatwood and brass. The kitchen and living room are open plan to increase the available social space, while large wooden panels hide the service parts – like the washing machine – from the main entrance.

Among the materials unique to the region, a branch of Cabreúva wood was used for the apartment’s dark gray lacquer and brass details in the living room cabinet. Granite with a brushed finish was used in the kitchen and service area, while concrete was chosen for the beams that separate the terrace from the living room and other areas.

Pune: This modern city apartment makes friends with gray tones.
